NEW FOR 2019. The BPOTY team is thrilled to be running a Conservation Documentary Award this year. This award requires the submission of a series of 3–6 images with extended captions that together document the story behind a bird-related conservation or environmental issue.

The Cahow (to give it its local name) is Bermuda’s national bird and over the years this exquisite grey Pterodroma petrel has acquired almost mythical status, thanks to its remarkable story. Paul Sterry explains more about this fantastic conservation project and why BPOTY are choosing to support it.

Paul Sterry looks at the work of the World Land Trust and one of their projects and the protection of the Sarus Crane. . Working with their long-term Indian partner, the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), it will protect critical wetland areas in Uttar Pradesh State in northern India.

But an estimated 320,000 seabirds are reckoned to be unintentionally hooked and killed each year by fishing activities, of which 100,000 are albatrosses.
